Now when He had left the crowd and gone home, His disciples were asking Him the meaning of this story. And He answered them, "Are you too without understanding yet? Do you not know that nothing from the outside that goes into a man can make him foul, because it does not reach his heart but only his stomach, and then passes off into the waste?" In thus speaking He made all foods clean.
But Peter said, "Never by any means, sir, for I have never eaten anything common, or not ceremonially cleansed."
as they kept shouting, "Men of Israel, help! help! This is the man who teaches everybody everywhere against our people and the law and this place; yea, more than that, he has actually brought Greeks into the temple and desecrated this sacred place."
Anyone who breaks the law of Moses pays the death penalty without any show of pity, on the evidence of two or three witnesses only. How much severer punishment do you suppose that one deserves who tramples the Son of God underfoot, and counts as a common thing the blood of the covenant by which he was consecrated, and has insulted the Spirit that grants God's unmerited favor?
But a man named Ananias, in partnership with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and, with his wife's full knowledge of it, kept back for themselves a part of the money and brought only a part of it and put it at the disposal of the apostles. And Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan so completely possessed your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and kept back for yourselves a part of the money received for the land?read more.
As long as it was unsold, was it not yours, and when it was sold, was not the money at your disposal? How could you have the heart to do such a thing! You did not lie to men but to God!" When Ananias heard these words, he fell dead, and a strange awe seized everybody who heard it. The younger men, however, got up, wrapped up his body, carried it out, and buried it. About three hours later, his wife came in, without having learned what had taken place. Peter said to her, "Tell me, did you sell the land for such and such a sum?" She answered, "Yes, that is it." Peter said to her, "How could both of you agree in such a way to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door; they will carry you out, too." She instantly fell dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
If you belonged to the world, the world would love what is its own. But it is because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, that the world hates you.
You faithless wives! Do you not know that the friendship of the world means enmity with God? So whoever wants to be a friend to the world puts himself down as an enemy to God.
But you are the chosen race, the royal priesthood, the consecrated nation, the people to be His very own, to proclaim the perfections of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once His mercy had not been shown you, but now it has. Dearly beloved, I beg you as aliens and exiles to keep on abstaining from the evil desires of your lower nature, because they are always at war with the soul.
I have given them your message, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to it. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil in it. They do not belong to the world just as I do not belong to it.
But God's foundation stands unshaken, with these inscriptions: "The Lord knows the people who belong to Him" and "Everyone who bears the name of the Lord must abstain from evil."
A religious worship that is pure and stainless in the sight of God the Father is this: To look after orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep one's own self unstained by the world.
